Most Nigerians buy crypto via local exchanges or peer-to-peer (P2P), paying a small premium over the official dollar rate (shown above). Always compare fees and verification, and treat stablecoins as dollar exposure, not a guaranteed store of value.

How the Naira Crypto Rate Works

When Nigerians buy or sell cryptocurrency, the price in naira is set by the peer-to-peer (P2P) market — real buyers and sellers trading directly — rather than by the official Central Bank rate. Because demand for dollars often exceeds the supply available at the official rate, dollar-pegged stablecoins like USDT usually trade at a premium. That gap, shown above as the P2P premium, is effectively the market price of a dollar in Nigeria.

TLT reads the live USDT/NGN rate from the P2P market and compares it to the official USD/NGN rate so you can see both numbers and the spread between them at a glance. Every other coin's naira price on this page is derived from its live US-dollar price multiplied by this P2P rate.

Why USDT Trades Above the Official Rate

USDT (Tether) is designed to stay worth about one US dollar. In Nigeria, access to dollars at the official rate is limited, so people turn to stablecoins to hold or move dollar value. That extra demand pushes the naira price of USDT above the official USD/NGN rate — the premium widens when dollar demand rises and narrows when it eases. It reflects real market conditions, not a flaw in the stablecoin itself.

Because of this, many Nigerians use stablecoins as a way to save in dollars and protect against naira depreciation. Remember that this is dollar exposure, not a guaranteed return — and converting back to naira happens at the prevailing P2P rate, which can move.

Why is the dollar (USDT) rate higher than the official rate?
