The first images of the lunar outfit made by Pierre Cardin for the astronauts of the European Space Agency have just been unveiled in Paris, in the offices of the fashion house.

The conquest of space by fashion is launched. It is in Pierre Cardin’s Parisian workshopsthis September 9, that the nephew of the late designer and current president of the company Pierre Cardin, Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin, revealed a preview of a spacesuit. This one is specially created for the astronauts of the ESA (the European Space Agency) and their training mission named Luna at the simulation center in Cologne, Germany. This partnership between the French fashion house and the Space Agency was formed in 2023 on the occasion of a fashion show of the brand in Switzerland.

In front of the journalists’ cameras, German astronaut Matthias Maurer had the privilege of wearing a prototype. This white training suit includes a spongy blue recycled fabric, present on the edge of it, as well as silver edges that outline the silhouette. The control unit is made up of an ivory-dyed block that reveals the Pierre Cardin gray logo. A space ensemble that is reminiscent of the previous pieces straight out of the future, born in the mind of the astronomy enthusiast who died in 2020, the Franco-Italian couturier Pierre Cardin. During the presentation of this lunar suit, Rodrigo Basilicati Cardin told the magazine WWD : “I hope Pierre is watching us and enjoying this.”

Pierre Cardin, a cosmic conqueror

Unable to jump into zero gravity, Pierre Cardin placed the imagination of the conquest of space at the heart of his collections from the 1960s. The designer, one of the pioneers of futuristic style, was at the forefront of the Space Age trend, an iconic fashion between 1965 and 1969 marked by space discoveries. The Cardin wardrobe then consisted of astonishing pieces such as a bubble dress, a jumpsuit with an aluminum effect, or a vinyl and rubber dress from his 1955 Cosmos collection. In 1971, during a visit to NASA, the designer was able to try on Buzz Aldrin’s space suit, an experience repeated a year before his death by this time donning Neil Armstrong’s space suit. One small step for man, one giant leap for the house of Pierre Cardin.
