Seven murders on board, six people identified, colleagues said

Six of the seven murder victims of the MV Al Bakhera anchored at the mouth of the Ishanbala Canal on the Meghna River in Haichar upazila in Chandpur have been identified. On Monday evening (December 23), sailors from another ship (Mughni-3) belonging to the same company identified these six people. However, neither the district administration nor the police announced the identity of the deceased.

According to the information provided by colleagues, the deceased are the ship’s driver (skipper) Kipria, the engine driver Salahuddin, Sukani Aminul Munsi, Gracer Sajibul, Azizul, and Majdul Islam. The identity of the other deceased was not known. The injured person was identified as Jewel. All their homes were moved. Jewel was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

Earlier, around 3:30 p.m., marine police recovered the bodies of five people from the ship MV Al Bakhera owned by M/s Barshi Enterprises. At this time, three other people were rescued in bloody condition. They both died after being taken to Chandpur General Hospital. But the identity of those killed has not been confirmed yet.

“We believe this killing happened due to preventing theft on the ship,” said Syed Mushfiqur Rahman, Superintendent of Police, Chandpur District of Marine Police. Efforts are underway to uncover the mystery of the incident. At the same time, we are trying to find out the details, names and identities of the victims.

According to hospital and police sources, the bodies of the dead and injured were hit with sharp weapons. Some had their throats cut. Police believe that miscreants committed the incident on Sunday night. The dead and wounded were members of the ship’s crew.

According to the Bangladesh Water Transport Cell, which operates the lighter ship, the ship was assigned to transport urea fertilizer on December 19. Its capacity is 800 metric tons. Its freight transportation contractor is M/s Hamidiya Enterprises. After receiving the allotment, the ship was loaded with 720 tons of urea fertilizer from KAFCO jetty on Karnaphuli River in Chittagong on December 21. On Sunday morning, they left with the manure for Bagabari in Sirajganj. At night, Ishanbala was supposed to anchor from Himchar upazila at the mouth of the canal. This fertilizer was from Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC).

They were supposedly killed by being stabbed in the throat with sharp weapons while they were sleeping.

He also said that on Monday afternoon, 999 from the National Emergency Service informed us that the ship had been attacked by thieves. Immediately upon receiving the report, a marine police force headed to the scene. We went there and found five bodies in five rooms of the ship. Three others were found seriously injured. They were later rescued and sent to the hospital for treatment. There were eight people on board.

The bodies of all the victims had injuries with sharp weapons, and some of them had their throats cut – said the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Chandpur General Hospital. After initial treatment, he was sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Moreover, Sjibul and Magdol were brought dead. They have injuries to their heads and bodies.

The investigation is ongoing, the capital said

Chandpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Mohsinuddin visited the site after receiving the news. He said: “One of the injured indicated that there were eight people on board the ship. He could not say anything about how the accident occurred. Because he cannot speak due to his airway being cut off. The accident may also have occurred due to theft or any other reason.
