Badi Alam Majumder, Chairman of the Electoral System Reform Commission, commented that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission (EC) to determine who will participate in the elections or who is eligible.
He said these things in response to reporters’ questions at the end of an exchange meeting on electoral system reforms at the conference hall of the Chittagong District Commissioner’s Office on Sunday (December 22). He said that the work of this committee is limited only to proposing reform of the electoral system. Through this, the primary goal is to improve the electoral process.
Badi Alam Majumdar said that everyone wants fair elections, and we have realized that there is interest, passion and enthusiasm among the people. Where people want to talk about us. He wants to express the heart’s desire. They want to offer different things. They all want fair and impartial elections. Through it, our democratic system will stand on a solid foundation. It is the general desire. We are working to achieve this goal.
He said: “We hope to submit our proposal before the 31st of this month, as the deadline has been set.” The chief advisor told us that the election train must be on track. The first task was to form the Election Committee. They did it.
He said that although the current Election Commission is subject to the old law, it does not conflict with the Reform Commission, and does not create any conflicting situation with our work. The search committee is composed of respected, non-partisan people. We want to believe that they are the right people and that they can give us a fair election.
In response to another question, Badi Alam Majumdar said that many people made clear statements as citizens. They don’t want to be used anymore. They want fair and impartial elections. So I try to do my bit that way. The statement contains a lot of false and misleading information. The information remains confidential. I am thinking of making a suggestion regarding these matters to be examined. Our proposals are not finalized yet.
Badi Alam Majumder said that there will be recommendations on reforming our electoral system. There are strong proposals for and against proportional seating. Taking everything into consideration. But there’s something else to know, which is that these decisions are not ours. The constitution must be changed for this purpose. Therefore, the committee that was formed to change the constitution must make a recommendation in this regard.
The head of the Electoral Reforms Commission said that the use of electronic voting machines in the upcoming elections is no longer an issue of electronic voting machines. This won’t happen. We have also given the same opinion,” the Election Commission said.
Badi Alam Majumder said that there are many types of false information in the affidavits of the candidates and they are also hidden. We are also planning a proposal in this regard. Our proposal is not finalized yet.
The members of the reform committee at that time were local government expert Professor Tufail Ahmed, former additional secretary of the Election Commission, Yasmin Tuli, and election expert Dr. Doctor of Medicine. Abdul Aleem, Chittagong District Commissioner Farida Khanum and others.
