Artificial intelligence (AI) is the prevailing hype among tech giants, yet Apple has remained notably reserved—until now. Industry insiders strongly believe that the iPhone-maker is poised to announce a major AI revolution at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 10th.
Reports suggest Apple is on the verge of a significant agreement. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the tech giant is currently in negotiations with OpenAI, the company behind the renowned AI program, ChatGPT.
The deal aims to integrate features of the chatbot into Apple’s forthcoming iOS 18 system, set to release this fall, Bloomberg reports, citing two insiders. Enthusiasts are hopeful that even Apple’s aging voice assistant, Siri, might undergo a comprehensive overhaul.
However, it appears Apple intends to utilize existing AI systems for the time being, rather than developing its own, and is prepared to pay handsomely for this integration. Should an agreement be reached, it could involve billions of dollars. Bloomberg also notes that Apple is holding similar discussions with Google for a licensing deal on the Gemini chatbot, though a resolution seems more distant there compared to the talks with OpenAI.
Meanwhile, Apple Insider has reported on a potential feature soon to grace iPhones: Apple is currently testing the extent to which AI can automatically transcribe voice memos. For longer recordings, the AI might also be able to provide brief summaries highlighting the key content—a useful tool for university lectures or work conferences.
Apple developers are also evaluating whether AI could eventually summarize websites in the Safari browser or chat messages in iMessage.
Which features will ultimately make their way to iPhones will only be revealed at the WWDC.
